World Junior Hockey Championships

After two of the most stunning hockey games I have seen to date, Canada has a birth in the World Junior Hockey Championship final today against Sweden. Both teams have posted a 5-0 record so far, and have put together impressive wins enroute to the finals.

To get to the final, Sweden had to come back against the Cinderella story Slovaks, and Canada scored with five seconds to go in a thriller against the Russians to force overtime and then a shootout victory. I was at Rexall Place to watch the Oilers/Stars battle it out, but managed to catch the end of the game on one of the many screes scattered throughout the arena. The Oilers went on to win their game 4-1, but there was no doubt which game was more important as the crowd definitely cheered louder when Eberle tied it up with 5 to go and also won it in the shootout.

I will obviously be cheering for Canada today in the final (7pm EST watch it live here), but whichever team that wins will deservedly become champions of the best world junior tournament I have ever witnessed.

  2. What a game to start 2009! Best tourney I’ve witnessed since Red Deer in ‘95, a win will be huge.
