Most Annoying NHL Fans
Tweet Posted by Mother Pucker on March 9th, 2010
Ever find yourself watching a game on tv, or even being at a game and thinking, “God, this team’s fans have to be the worst in the league!” I do all the time, so why not settle this once and for all?
Here are some reasons that I can think of off the top of my head:
- Their fans invade your city and boo your home team.
- They constantly fight in the stands.
- They feel superior to everyone else, not just the teams, everyone.
- They boo the national anthems.
- They are ignorant to the rules.
- And on and on…
Whatever your reason is for hating their fans, let’s start off voting for all 30 NHL teams to see who makes the top 16. How about we think of this as the regular season. Everyone gets 5 votes for this round, so get on it! Have more to say than just a simple vote? Write a comment at the bottom! Now let’s go!
Most Annoying NHL Fans - Regular Season
- Philadelphia Flyers (48%, 827 Votes)
- Pittsburgh Penguins (42%, 716 Votes)

Awesome.
Yeah I figured this would be a beauty!
This is hard because one of the teams I voted for was my team: the LA Kings. For better or worse, we can be some of the best or worst fans in the league. Starting fights at Staples Center when we absolutely destroy a team is just weak. However, at times, we can come together and really get behind our team.
This season, the Philadelphia Flyers fans I have come in contact with are the worst in the league. We only see them every other season but, this year, they made an impression.
I also had to vote against my team’s fans (Washington Caps) because we have so many johnny-come-lately fans and they a) don’t know the game and b) make obnoxious noise during our own National Anthem. It’s bad enough to boo someone else’s national anthem, but to disrespect your own is a whole other level of stupidity.
I find it interesting that of the top 15, most of them are eastern confrence teams and I must say I would agree. And by the way I love this poll.

I love the fact that 2 of the top 3 overwhelming leaders have had fought for the cup in the past 2 years. The other one, well they’re Philly, and it’s to be expected I suppose.
PS…Let’s go Pens!
Great poll. It was a difficult decision though, since there are a lot of annoying fans out there.
I’m sorry to see my team’s fans (Philadelphia) ranked so high on the hate scale, but I can’t say I didn’t expect it. I’ve found myself hating other Flyers fans on many occasions so I won’t argue.

is it because we know how to throw a party? http://tinyurl.com/yhor7nw
LET’S GO PENS!
Try this one on for size.

Flyers fans deserve this title, hands down.
Flyers, Boston and Washington’s fans all deserve sharing top honor for being the most annoying and overall, STUPID fans in the NHL.
Hey Dallas: The national anthem is NOT ABOUT YOUR HOCKEY TEAM, so shut the hell up!
And sit the f*ck down when it’s not appropriate to stand, too! Your big heads are blocking the camera.
Red Wing fans by a mile. Any time they don’t win, it’s due to a league wide conspiracy. And they’re all over the place. Due to the lack of jobs in Michigan.
Can someone kindly explain to me what funky, new age math is used when counting the percentages.
It says Detroit, Pittsburgh and Philly each have 33%, and the other 26 teams have a combined 127% of the votes.
LOL, yeah… it’s dividing by voters instead of votes. New age funky erroneous programming.
The top three are actually 15%, 15%, and 14% at this moment.
and the Penguins fans come on here and PROVE why they lead the list. They dont even realize it. “because we know how to party. Lets go Pens” . LMAO. They are conducting a poll moron and once again you use it as a chance to root on your team. No wonder everyone hates you. And what partying has to do with the poll in any way boggles my mind. Stick to the facts…
Here is the best part about Penguins fans. Typically they are transplanted Pittsburghers in another city that go to the one or 2 games that their team is playing on the road that season. What they fail to mention in all of their bragging is that they barely saved their own team in their own city—had it not been for Lemieux. Why?? Have you ever been to Pittsburgh?? They run screaming out of the place and think they are these great fans when they arrive in new towns. As annoying as Flyer fans are and rude, and violent in some cases, at least they usually live in the city and they are very very loyal passionate fans. I still hate them too. Definitely agree with the girl about the Caps fans. They sit on the edge of their seats, they walk up and down during play, and some of them are not that educated on the game. As far as johniecomelately’s? You can count that as EVERY team. When the team sucks, the building is empty. Not much value in spending hard earned money a team going nowhere. It doesnt mean the fans dont care. Or that somehow they just discovered hockey.
“…Why?? Have you ever been to Pittsburgh?? They run screaming out of the place and think they are these great fans when they arrive in new towns.”
You should not talk about things you do not know anything about. That is an ignorant statement based on assumptions and NOT facts. The team’s financial hardship had NOTHING to do with a lack of fan support. It was because of horrilbe management by the previous owner (Howard Baldwin…who founded the New England {Hartford} Whalers, and was part owner of the Minnesota North Stars…so you see he has a ‘good’ track record with NHL franchises.)
As far as transplanted fans, EVERY city has fans moving away from it, but only Pittsburghers remain loyal to thier teams. I personally know people who moved to Pittsburgh from New York, Toronto, San Jose, Chicago, and Detroit. Although they all keep an eye on their home teams, they have all….with the exception of the the Detroit guy, become fans of Pittsburgh sports team. I would NEVER do that.
Having said that, I am ashamed to admit that we are annoying as hell. We tend to overrun other team’s arenas, and are very loud. I get upset when I see Pittsburgh fans with signs, or terrible towels. It’s okay to go to someone else’s stadium, and cheer your team, but the gimmicks should be left at home for home games. However, unlike Philadelphia, we don’t get violent, and we don’t rub it in to your faces when we win. Also Pittsburgher are good to out of towners. We try not to let bad apples ruin our image. I have personally told fellow fans to shut the hell up and sit down when they were being exceptionally rude to Maple Leafs and Blues fans (who themselves were acting in an appropiate manner for being visitors.)
Sonja is spot on. I hate to vote for my fellow Caps fans, but there are a bunch of asshats in the stands that are giving us a bad name.
First are the stupid ones yelling the “1..2..3..It’s all your fault!” at the opposing goalie. Really? At least 90% of the time it’s the D’s fault, and these goalies are facing the NHL’s highest scoring team! Cut the guy some slack. His job is hard enough, and it’s almost never ALL the goalie’s fault.
Second are the guys in suits who sit in their company’s seats for the night, act like they own the place, know nothing about hockey and yet feel they have the right to criticize both the home and away players (with the always educated and informative comment of “they suck”). Sit the f down when the puck is in play, shut up and stow the Blackberry.
Third, I have mixed feelings about yelling during the national anthem. The yelling “O” for “O say can you see” is stupid in DC. It was started in Baltmore for the Orioles, so in DC for a Caps game, you’re 0 for 2 on appropriateness. I’m ok with yelling “RED” with the “rocket’s red glare” since the Caps new color is red and the slogan is “rock the red. Technically it is singing along, if only for one word.
As for the uneducated hockey fans, there are bound to be a bunch at every game, so for us in the know, take a minute to politely explain a couple of the finer points of the game (during a break in play, of course) and it’ll be a better watching experience for us all – unless there are Rangers fans in the stands.
As a lifetime Capitals fan I’m surprised at how many elitist Capitals fans came out to vote. Prior to the lock-out we had an empty stadium… no one came out to cheer on the Caps. Now we’re playing well, we have an extremely loud stadium, lots of fans showing love, and even players commenting on how great the fans our. Yet these elitists still find something to complain about! Shut up and enjoy the game. If you’re most upset about your fellow fans, then your priorities are screwed up.
Im from New York…any way I can vote for everyone?
I am a lifelong Flyers fan and at one point had season tix for 16 years. I admit that at most games I rolled my eyes at the way other fans were acting in the stands and agree that they should be ranked in the top three, but I have traveled to the Igloo in Pittsburgh on many occassions, and I can say that Pens are the whiniest, most band wagoning fans in the NHL that I have seen thus far and absolutely deserve the #1 spot…and that is with all due respect to their recent Cup victory.
I think the Eastern Conference is well represented at the top because the Eastern Conference cities are so much closer together than the Western Conference cities, so you’re going to see Toronto fans at Buffalo games, Buffalo fans at Ranger games, Ranger fans at Devils games, etc.
The Eastern teams at the bottom of the list are from cities where people just don’t care about hockey.
@Alex: Caps fans shouting “red” during the national anthem is also a ripoff…from Cornell. Fans of the Cornell Big Red have been doing that for generations.
Goldleader: The “Red” yell at the Verizon Center in DC was partly to put to rest the idiot “O” yell of Orioles fans at the beginning of the Nat’l Anthem; this is DC, not B’more (I don’t like any sports cheers during the anthem, but thought you should know).
And Darren…it took a while for fans living east of the city who had a 45 min-1 hour drive to Cap Center to be replaced by DC-area fans (in No. Va. for example). My vote for Pitt & Philly goes back to the late 70s & 80-90s when you could count on 10-15 fights in the stands anytime we played the Pens or Flyers (with their out-of-control drunks in the stands).
Buffaslug fans are the worst, hands down. They show up drunker than anybody else, start more fights than anybody else, and act like they’re God’s gift to the game of hockey and vastly superior than everybody else. And did I mention that they’ve never won anything? Ever? At least the Flyer, Ranger, Red Wing, Islander, and Penguin Scum fans can claim a Cup. Hades, even the Ning fans can do that.
But in my book, the Buffaslug fans edge out the Penguin Scum fans but not by much. Pittsburgh fans have an unsightly sense of entitlement to buying all the tickets in all the arenas around the league. How dare anybody try to keep Pittsburgh refugees from watching their team in their new city!!! I’m sure there are some Penguin Scum fans out there who think that the other 29 NHL teams should be forced into giving them tickets for free so that they can watch Pittsburgh out on the road. The one nice thing about Penguin Scum fans is when you beat their team on your home ice, they disappear so fast you think somebody had announced that there was a 2 for 1 sale on Iron City Light.
Excuse me…we don’t bitch about any other team stopping us from buying tickets, because NOT ELSE DOES. It’s only a cheap trick pulled by your team. How would you feel if we blocked YOU from OUR arena??? Or better yet, the Winter Classic. (I know we can’t, because NHL controls that, but we still wouldn’t if we could.)
@GoldLeader – It’s also an RPI thing. *sulks* Don’t go claiming it was just Cornell.
@GoldLeader – Thanks, Andy Bernard. I didn’t know that, but I’m not surprised. DC fans have little to claim as their own, given we’re all transplants from somewhere else.
Although as much as I hate to admit it, that this guy is a Caps original:
http://capitalspirit.wordpress.com/where-did-you-get-that/
Sadly, no photos, but those of you who have seen “the Cape Guy” know who he is. A decent Caps blogger, but wears a red cape, rave lights and … well a million other things he probably got at a real life World of Warcraft store.
flyers fans are loud and obnoxious but the y dont boo the canadian national anthem, maybee sarah pallin but not canada. and just a note when mario lumiex had to retire for the first time cause of cancer philadelphia gave him a standding ovation when he came off the ice
I worked at a sports bar in Columbus for years, and I can say hands down the Flyers fans are the absolute worst. When they come around, they ALWAYS have to start stuff, and they’re the only fans that require extra security. Things ALWAYS get broken when they’re around, and they are rude to their servers as well as bad tippers.
I was surprised to see Penguins fans and Capitals fans ranked so high. I despise both teams equally, but find their fans to be quite friendly. Yes, they are loud, and I guess that could be perceived as obnoxious and rude, but I just think they love their teams, and I don’t have a problem with that. They are also the most polite to servers, and better tippers. (Chicago fans rank high their too.)
Rangers, Red Wings, and Canadiens fans are very obnoxious in the “I’m better than you” kind of way. They think just because they have a rich history in the NHL, they can treat they are entitled to be winners, and ‘expansion’ fans are beneath them. They aren’t so much trouble makers, or exceptionally rude, but they just do shit that gets under your skin. I find it to be very poor etiquette when you go into another team’s arena and wave giant flags, or throw your octopus on THEIR ice after you beat them. You won, congratulations, now don’t rub it in in our own house!. I don’t care if you cheer for your team, just don’t get out of hand in a visiting arena.
Okay, one argument that simply HAS to go is the ‘band wagon’ argument. With the exception of Canadian teams, EVERY TEAM IN EVERY SPORT is going to have them. Every city is going to have loyal fans that don’t particularly care to to spend a boat load of money on a team that’s losing miserabley. That doesn’t make them bad fans. So quit acting you’re better than everyone else, because you’re NOT!
