Alexander Ovechkin Knee Suspension

Here I come…

WHAM!
Ok, word came down this afternoon that Alexander Ovechkin has been suspended for two games for this knee on knee hit. Since the news has come down the whole hockey universe has been talking about it by either saying “2 isn’t enough!” or “superstars shouldn’t be suspended!” to “he is soooooo dirty!!!” bla bla bla
Anyone want my take on it? Yeah I know I’m pretty much talking to myself here so the answer is undoubtedly a resounding no, but whatever you’re going to hear it anyway.
I think that this hit was fine, and shit happens.
Surprised? I really don’t care because that’s just my take on it
K seriously though once you watch the video, you can see where I’m coming from. The side view looks like a total knee, but if you see the angle from the other end of the rink you’ll see that Ovechkin was going straight at him till the other player made a left turn. Ovechkin being the player he is wanted to finish his hit, so he also started to turn. Anyone that’s thrown a hockey check knows that if you try and float around like this:
(not picking on you Mark, just showing how someone would take a turn with their skates together) – YOU’RE GOING TO GET DEMOLISHED. So in turn you spread your legs and try and keep the best balance you can. I don’t mean spreading them like your slutty friend that is going for 50 kills before her 25th birthday, but you know, enough to hold some serious balance, because after all, that’s an essential part of a successful check. You ever see a player drive hard to the net from the side? They gliding in feet together? NO, they are in the exact same position that Ovi was in when this hit took place.
Anyway, here is the youtube clip so you can make up your own mind on this one. I Just wanted to get it out there that I don’t see this as being a problem. No it’s not because Ovi is a stud player, or because I don’t think superstars should feel the suspension wrath, just because shit happens.

ur right mother pucker! shit happens and ur full of it!!
there’s accidental, incidental, and on purpose shit!!!
ov’s shit backfired.
u must be a laff fan.
Wow this must be your first time here if you think I’m a leaf fan
I posted a blog about this from the opposite end of the spectrum. As great a hockey player as Ovechkin is, and he’s easily one of the best, he has had a history of taking cheap shots on his opponents. The fact that he is the NHL’s biggest star leaves him protected.
We are entitled to our opinions. I think you bring up some valid points from a players perspective. Another thing to add to your point is the speed of the game. Hockey is literally a split-second reaction style game. I’m just on the end where I’m sick of seeing Ovechkin make dirty plays and no one does a thing about it. Two games is still nothing when you take into account that he’s day-to-day.
Yeah the split second reaction thing is another point that I could have made.
There are definitely opinions that can be made from both ends, and I agree that nobody should be treated differently just because of who you are. Good news is that now that he has a suspension under his belt, next time he does something dirty he will pay even more.
What makes it ironic from my point, is that I like Ovechkin. I still feel Crosby is a better all-around player, but Ovechkin brings excitement. I hate how hockey fans bring up the names like combat sports. I can like both mixed martial-arts and boxing. I like to say Ovechkin is the NHL’s version of LeBron James. Dirty hit, what dirty hit? Traveling, what traveling? Next up on the suspension list, Keith Ballard!
twas my first time here. sorry for the leaf knock!
glad ur not a flame. i like what i see so far.
keep it up mother pucker.
AO isn’t cheap. AO finishes checks, which is something you’re taught as a kid, and coaches continue to preach that your entire hockey life. AO did nothing wrong here. I have no problems with the majority of AO’s hits. It’s refreshing that the league has a star of this caliber that plays for the love of the game and it’s fans .
I was there and at first I just thought it was an unfortunate hit. Nothing malicious. Just a hit that luckily did not take out another of my D-men.
I never get why anyone would try to go “knee on knee” because if Ovechkin tried, he sure took the worst of it.
Thank god a voice of reason. You have no idea how many arguments I’ve had with people over this.
There’s a reason Ovechkin is being suspended or called out for this when other players will not. And that’s because he’s already been painted a dirty hitter. Not because the hit was dirty, but because people want to see it that way.
If Gleason doesn’t turn into the hit nothing happens.
Most defensemen see a guy coming and avoid the hit.
Gleason? No.
[...] truly enjoys playing the game and plays it well. You’re right that he is no comparison to Alexander Ovechkin but still, two tricks in two consecutive games is still pretty kick ass. No, not even kick [...]
