What is Your Worst Hockey Memory?

After watching the absolute destruction that took place tonight at Rexall between the Sabres and Oilers, I started to wonder what my worst hockey memory was.

Obviously this game was disgusting as the Oilers were blown out 10-2 by the Sabres, but I don’t think that it was my worst hockey memory because it is just one of the 82 regular season games.

The ones that come to mind are when Gretzky was traded from Edmonton to the LA Kings, and the next one is when Messier was traded to the NY Rangers. Both trades were shocking, and I can remember exactly where I was and what I was doing when I heard the news.

Another one is when Canada lost to Hasek and company in the 1998 Olympics in Nagano. I told my friends that I would eat my hat if Canada didn’t take home gold, so needless to say I had to try and take a few bites of the thinnest hat I could find.

So how about you? What is your worst hockey memory?

Trick Goalie Pads

Apparently a little day dreaming in chemistry class is all it took for Trevor Leahy to come up with this pad design. Leahy, a high school hockey goaltender, and also graphic designer, came up with the idea to make his pads look like the netting behind him in attempt to fool opposing shooters.

“When the shooter comes down and only has a split second to shoot the puck, they’re looking for net,” said Leahy, a senior from Hampton, N.H., who grew up in Byfield. “If you put the net on the pad, they’ll shoot at the pad instead of the goal.”

Pretty smart idea, and kind of surprised that this kinda thing hasn’t been tried before considering that NHL goalies have tried making the interior of their pads white as to make the 5 hole appear larger in the past. Anyway, good on this kid for doing this, and also applying for a patent which will hopefully make him some sweet change one day.

And how well do they work?

At the Pingree Holiday Tournament in late December, Leahy backstopped Pingree to two shutouts in one day – a 1-0 win over Northwood School from Lake Placid in the morning and a 3-0 win over Kents Hill School of Maine that night. For the season he has a goals-against average under 2.00, and he has had some memorable nights with more than 40 saves against some of the prep school elite teams.

2.00 GAA with two shutouts in a row is a fairly good indication I think. Here is the full story from the Boston Globe.

King Henrik is the Winner!

Thanks to everyone who took part in the hockey hottie voting that’s been going on over the last two weeks. Round one was basically a free for all that I was even included in, and then round two was a battle of your top five choices. I have to say that it was quite an entertaining process with all kinds of complaints like “How did Ovechkin get in that list? What is he, scarry ugly hot or something?”

Anyway, Henrik Lundqvist was the winner with 31% of the vote, followed by Crosby at 28% of the vote. All heil to the King! (or maybe just the females that voted for him ;) )

Anyone Else Going Crazy?

Ok it’s been a few days now since there has been any games in the NHL, and I’m starting to feel like this baby.

It’s a funny feeling when you are used to watching, or at least reading about / tweeting about a few hockey games per night, and then to have it completely cut off like this. I feel like John Muckler would have felt like if Edmonton was a dry town back in the 80’s and 90’s.

Anyway, the next thing we have to look forward to is the All Star Game and the NHL skills competition this weekend… but then again with how those two events have been as of late, I may still feel like this baby by the time its over.

Blackhawks Fan Wins a Million Dollars

I still can’t imagine how this must have felt for the lucky fan that won a million dollars at the Blackhawks/Wild game last night. According to the Hawks website, they are awarding a cool mil to one lucky fan in attendance if the Hawks score at exactly the 10:00 mark of the second period.

Last night this happened when Martin Havlat got one past Backstrom at, you guessed it, 10:00 of the second period.

I wonder if the fans even realized what had just happened when the goal was scored? I would have probably forgotten about it, cheered for the goal, and then moments later been like, “heyyyy, isn’t there something about 10:00 that I’m forgetting?”

Anyway, congrautlations to that lucky fan for the massive win! I’ve been trying to win the $40,000 50/50 draw here for the longest time, but with this kinda prize pool it makes me think that I should relocate to Chicago.

And whats with this chick you ask? Well, I did a search for “million dollars” on Google images, and she came up on the first page. Fitting? I think so.

Glenn Anderson Jersey Retirement

This is a two part post, one where I praise the Oilers and Anderson, and one where I complain about the Oilers…

First, I’m happy that Glenn Anderson finally got inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame this year, and will also be having his jersey retired tonight at Rexall place in Edmonton. His #9 will be raised to the rafters tonight to join other Oiler greats that you may have heard of.

It’s great that the Oilers realized that he was a huge part of the 80’s team that produced all that magic, and it’s fitting that the jersey retirement has been picked for a game against Wayne Gretzky’s Phoenix Coyotes (funny how that works out hey?).

And now for the second part of this post, which is a straight out complaint that I will leave to one single line in bold letters:

WHY THE EFFFFF IS THIS GAME ON PAY PER VIEW???

Thanks to the 190 people that voted last round, and provided us with our top five of Lundqvist, Crosby, Kane, Ovechkin, and Pyatt. Now its time for the final round of voting, and this time you only get to pick your favourite, not five like last time.

Voting starts right now, and will continue until midnight on January 23, 2009, at which time we will crown your favourite. Still trying to think of a worth award for that, so if you have any suggestions, scratch it down in the comments.

Now get to it!

Pierre McGuire is a MONSTER (douche)

Oh man am I ever getting frustrated with Pierre McGuire lately. I don’t know if its because TSN is actually showing meaningful or watchable games this year, or if its becaus I got an overdose of this clown during the World Juniors. Either way, I’m sick of him, to the point that I’ve actually had to flip away from TSN broadcasts in order to prevent my hockey stick to go through the plasma tv, or the couch out the basement window.

I was wondering if I was alone in my thinking that he is a MONSTERdouche, but apparently I’m not. While at a boston pizza during the WJHC I ran a little poll with the people at my table and the adjacent tables, and pretty much the first words out of everyones mouth was “Effff I hate that guy.”

I also polled my twitter followers the other night and got “I am watching the Cherry/Orr prospects game because of that… Pierre grates on my nerves with his cheesy one-liners.” from Carmen in Calgary, “Hahaha. Mcguire is an idiot, you’d think they would have figured that out by now.” from Kaylie, “i hate when Mcguire is down on ice level – hes such a douche” from mantooth in Chicago, “whole heartedly concure. That guy is a MONSTER ass.” from Geoff in Edmonton, and “that little dude ruined NHL on NBC games for me. Can you imagine trying to play with that dude yammering away between benches?” from SMCutter in New York.

I do have to say that having someone down on ice level between the benches is an awesome idea, but seriously pick someone better! As far as I can tell with TSN, Gord Miller is the play by play guy, and the douche is the colour guy. And as far as I can tell from all my years of watching hockey, the play by play guy covers just that, and the color guy throws in his two cents during stopages in play. Ever notice how often McGuire decides to bring up some uselss stat about where some guy shoveled snow when he was young, WHILE THE PLAY IS GOING ON? Who gives a flying one? I had to give props to Miller one night for basically telling the douche to shut up and let him do his job! Just about jumped off the couch to cheer after that one!

Anyway TSN, get rid of this guy. I love the style of the one up one down, but you need to seriously consider who you have down there as viewers are turning away simply because they can’t stand your broadcaster.
