NHL GameCenter Review

Last night NHL GameCenter gave out another free preview of its streaming video and audio, coupled with stats service. GameCenter runs at $30 Canadian per month, and provides you with pretty much real time stats and audio for every game, and video for quite a few of them as well. Anyway, last night I parked myself in front of the computer for what felt like an eternity as I took in as much hockey as I could, and to compile this review.

Colton Orr vs. Eric Boulton

With the free preview of NHL GameCenter last night, I was able to watch a few out of market games, and luckily I caught this fight between Colton Orr of the New York Rangers, and Eric Boulton of the Atlanta Thrashers. This tilt lasts upwards of two minutes, and is the best I’ve seen so far this year:

NHL Ice Girls Calendar

The Fourth Period, and Hockey Fights Cancer have teamed up to bring you the 2009 NHL Ice Girls calendar. The calendars cost $19.99 each, with free shipping, and $1 being donated to Hockey Fights Cancer. Ok, well maybe Hockey Fights Cancer didn’t produce this calendar, but TFP is being kind enough to donate a little of their profit from sales towards this fund. Congrats to them for that.

Apparently this calender isn’t filled with actual NHL ice girls, but instead some hot women that somehow like hockey, or were once photographed in a hockey arena or holding a stick.

Earlier talk of NHL Ice Girls on this site has garnered quite a lot of attention. Any of you that spoke out in the comments going to splurge and buy this thing?

NHL Trade Deadline Pushed Back

Not really major news, but the NHL and its board of governors have agreed to push the NHL trade deadline back a day from Tuesday March 3rd, to Wednesday March 4th, 2009.

Apparently there are 12 games scheduled for the 3rd, and only two scheduled for the 4th, so this will probably make it easier for GMs and teams to concentrate on their games, and on the players they are pursuing, and dumping. Its funny how they could fix this scheduling faux-pas, but didn’t realize that they missed a chance for a few games the day after all 30 teams played. Doesn’t anyone else think that any new fans that were brought on board this past Saturday may have been interested in a game or two on Sunday? It’s not like the teams don’t already play on consecutive nights, so I don’t see why the NHL would make it’s schedule that way. Oh well…

Well its going to be mayhem tonight, October 25, 2008, for hockey fans as all 30 NHL teams are in action, in what the NHL is calling Super Saturday. For some reason I can’t remember how often this happens, but this is the first time I can remember it in a long time. Note to executives that are looking for a way to kick start the season? Have Super Saturday as the opening night of the NHL regular season. THAT would get peoples attention!

Anyway, lets get to it with tonight’s TV schedule: Read more

In speaking with Michael DiLorenzo, NHL Director of Corporate Communications, I’ve learned that there will be another free preview of NHL GameCenter on October 30, 2008. When I asked why they chose that date, Michael’s response was, “My latest information on GameCenter is that there will be a free trial on oct 30 which is a thurs when 24 teams are playing.” Here is a list of the teams that are playing that day, and the channels that they will be broadcast on (for full listings for the month of October, be sure to check out our October NHL TV listings):

Lucic & Van Ryn Glass Shattering Check

For those of you that were watching the Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Boston Bruins game earlier tonight, you know exactly what this video is going to show. For the rest of you that may have missed it, you have to watch this video! When it happened live I couldn’t believe my eyes, and then watching it in slow motion made it even more unreal. Luckily it appears that nobody was seriously injured, and the fan with all the blood on her face appears to have been well taken care of. Nice hit Milan Lucic!

I wonder if the people in the first few rows were least be compensated with some sweet swag or tickets to future games?

NHL Ice Girls

It appears that more and more teams are opting to have a team of Ice Girls to entertain the crowd by scraping the ice, giving out prizes, cheering, or whatever else they see fit. I have only seen the Dallas Stars’ Ice Girls live, and I think they only skated around with shovels during tv timeouts. There were maybe one or two fluid skaters, but the rest were obviously not too steady on a single blade. Regardless, they look good, and in my mind that’s all they are out there being paid for.

What is everyones take on the cheerleaders with ice skates on? Do you think they are necessary? Think you couldn’t live without them? Thnk every team will eventually adopt them? Let’s hear it!
